For roughly three years, buying a graphics card at a fair price felt like winning the lottery. RTX 3080s listed at $699 were flipping on eBay for $1,500. AMD's RX 6800 XT — a card that retailed for $649 — was practically a myth on store shelves. Gamers set up bots to stalk Best Buy's website at 3 a.m. like it was some kind of digital Black Friday that never ended. The official story was simple: COVID disrupted supply chains, crypto miners hoovered up inventory, and there just weren't enough chips to go around.

That story was never the whole truth. And the more you dig into what actually happened between 2020 and 2023, the more it starts to look less like a perfect storm and more like a deliberate strategy.

The "Chip Shortage" Narrative Was Convenient — A Little Too Convenient

There's no question that TSMC and Samsung, the foundries responsible for manufacturing the vast majority of consumer GPUs, faced real capacity constraints in 2020. Pandemic-related factory slowdowns, a surge in demand for consumer electronics, and automotive chip shortages were all legitimate disruptions. But here's the thing: supply chain analysts who tracked wafer allocation during this period have consistently noted that gaming GPU production was not cut nearly as severely as companies like NVIDIA publicly implied.

Internal procurement data reviewed by supply chain research firm TrendForce as far back as 2021 showed that NVIDIA's wafer orders at TSMC actually increased year-over-year during the supposed shortage. The company wasn't getting less product — it was getting more. What changed was how that product was being priced, allocated, and distributed.

Some industry insiders who spoke to trade publications under anonymity described a calculated shift in NVIDIA's channel strategy. Rather than flooding the retail market with cards at MSRP, allocation was deliberately throttled to select partners, keeping visible supply tight while actual warehouse inventory told a different story. The result? Artificial scarcity that let the secondary market do the pricing dirty work without NVIDIA ever having to publicly raise its own suggested retail prices.

Retailers Weren't Innocent Bystanders

It'd be easy to pin this entirely on the manufacturers, but the retail side of the equation was equally compromised. Major electronics retailers — including some of the biggest names in the US market — implemented "bundle" requirements that forced buyers to purchase overpriced peripherals, monitors, or accessories just to access GPU inventory. Technically, the card was still at MSRP. In practice, you were paying $300 extra for a gaming headset you didn't want.

Smaller boutique PC builders and third-party Amazon sellers, meanwhile, were openly scalping with almost no consequences. NVIDIA's Founders Edition cards were supposed to be direct-to-consumer through its own website, theoretically cutting out the middleman. In reality, bots — many of them operated by organized scalping groups — swept inventory within seconds of each drop. NVIDIA knew this was happening. The company had the technical capability to implement purchase verification systems far earlier than it did. It chose not to, and during that window, the hype around unobtainable cards arguably made the RTX 30-series one of the most talked-about product launches in gaming hardware history.

There's a cynical marketing logic to that, and it's hard to ignore.

Crypto Was the Perfect Scapegoat

The cryptocurrency mining boom gave manufacturers and retailers a ready-made villain to point at, and the press ran with it enthusiastically. Miners were buying GPUs in bulk — that part is real. Ethereum's proof-of-work model made consumer graphics cards surprisingly effective mining hardware, and large-scale operations were absolutely pulling inventory off the market.

But the scale of miner impact was routinely exaggerated in mainstream coverage, often citing figures that conflated commercial mining rigs (which use entirely different, purpose-built ASICs) with consumer GPU demand. Meanwhile, NVIDIA quietly launched its Cryptocurrency Mining Processor (CMP) line — cards purpose-built for mining with no display outputs. If the company genuinely wanted to redirect miner demand away from gaming GPUs, that product line should have been aggressively marketed and heavily supplied. Instead, CMP cards were produced in limited quantities and priced in ways that made them barely more attractive to miners than the gaming cards they were supposedly meant to replace.

Ethereum's eventual switch to proof-of-stake in September 2022 — which made GPU mining essentially worthless overnight — should have triggered a massive inventory correction. And it did, briefly. But by then, the psychological damage to pricing expectations had already been done.

The Permanent Repricing of PC Gaming

Here's where the long-term harm really lives. When NVIDIA launched the RTX 40-series in late 2022 and into 2023, it didn't reset prices to pre-shortage norms. It anchored to the inflated secondary market prices that had become normalized during three years of scarcity. The RTX 4090 launched at $1,599. The RTX 4080 came in at $1,199 — a card that, by historical performance-per-dollar metrics, should have been priced closer to $700-$800.

NVIDIA's justification was vague appeals to "increased development costs" and the value of DLSS and ray tracing features. But the timing is hard to ignore: the company had spent three years conditioning the market to accept that high-end GPUs cost over a thousand dollars. Launching the 40-series at those price points wasn't a new pricing strategy. It was the harvest.

AMD followed suit with its RX 7000 series, pricing flagship cards far above what the pre-2020 competitive landscape would have allowed. The shortage had effectively reset the entire industry's pricing floor, and both major players were perfectly happy to build on that new foundation.

So What Happens Now?

The GPU market has largely stabilized heading into 2025, with availability no longer being the crisis it once was. But "stable" doesn't mean "fair." Mid-range cards that would have cost $300 in 2019 now routinely launch at $500. The entry point for a competent gaming PC has shifted dramatically, and there's no sign that manufacturers have any intention of walking prices back.

For US gamers, the practical impact is real: building or upgrading a PC rig now requires a significantly larger budget than it did just five years ago, with no corresponding leap in real-world gaming performance for everyday titles. The ultra-settings 4K experience remains a luxury product, and that's not an accident.

The GPU shortage will be remembered as a supply chain casualty of the pandemic era. But the evidence increasingly suggests it was also something else: a stress test that proved just how much the market could bear, run by companies that already knew the answer and built their future pricing strategies around it. Gamers paid the tuition. The manufacturers kept the diploma.
